Select the Right Adhesive for Your Wallpaper

There are specific adhesives for specific wallpaper types, and it’s important to know the difference between paper and vinyl. Check the label on your wallpaper for the right one or just ask around when shopping for your wallpaper.

Prepare your wall

Like painting, it’s also important to prepare your wall before installation of wallpaper, a smooth wall will make your installation come out nicely.  You can do this by dusting off the cobwebs with a broom. You can also use a sandpaper to smoothen off the wall surface then scrub down with a wet sponge and light detergent.

Apply adhesive on your wall

Using a mini-roller brush, apply adhesive on your wall. Depending on the type of adhesive, you may have to dilute it with water, making sure it’s not too watery but thick enough to hold the wallpaper. Once you have evenly applied adhesive on your wall, you may proceed sticking the wallpaper against the wall. Depending on the type of wallpaper, you may want to immerse in water before pasting against the wall.

Note that you will be needing razor blades to cut out edges that don’t fit right. Razors dull quickly, so don’t use them sparingly.

Use a Wallpaper Sweep

Before pasting, make sure you have a wallpaper sweep at hand. The wallpaper sweep is used to smoothen out wallpaper and take out excess adhesive, going up and down in a vertical manner. It also helps you take out air that may be trapped and would likely cause bubble.

Don’t Panic If You See Bubbles

When installing your paper, air will most likely get trapped in between — this is typical, and it should go away as the wallpaper settles and the adhesive dries. If it doesn’t, just puncture the bubble with a small pin and gently flatten out the paper with the wallpaper sweep.
