Is your kitchen December ready ???
Is your kitchen December ready?
The festive season is fast coming upon us guys and it’s important to ask ourselves if we are truly ready to usher in the season. Last week, we started off the first part of this mini-blog post series that is going to be our ultimate guide to getting our home in shape for Christmas. You can catch up on the post here if you missed it. Today we continue with the series. And today we focus on the kitchen. Is your kitchen December ready?
So it’s going to be a big bang celebration. The Johnsons from Texas are joining your family for Christmas. Sister Augustine and her twins are coming from the village to spend time with you. Your kids are having one or two friends come over to spend the holidays with you. Wow! Now that is a lot of people coming into your home. But there’s really nothing to worry about if you follow the guides in last week’s post. No one will be taking the couch. Everyone will be well accommodated in their allocated space/corner. So the next big question, without doubt, is Food! Yes, food and the kitchen.
As mentioned earlier, with adequate planning, it will be almost impossible to feel overwhelmed because you have everything right under control. Now since everyone that comes visiting will be spending more than a day, this means you are not only planning for the Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas day meals. You have to consider what everyone will be eating the first few days before the celebration and a day or two after celebrations. An efficient way to go about this is:
Take stock of your pantry
This is the time to make a list of all the food items in your kitchen. From foodstuffs to cereals and beverages. Make a checklist of all the staple foods. Rice, beans, garri, spaghetti etc. You want to make sure you have enough to cater for everyone and if it isn’t enough, it will be a good time to go shopping. You should also bear in mind that the food items for your Christmas meal should be bought separately.
Is there anyone with special diets?
Considering the fact that you will be hosting people that have probably never spent time in your house or aren’t exactly familiar with your family menu, it is advisable to have an idea of what their diet is before they come over. Is there a vegetarian? Is anyone lactose intolerant? This will go a long way in showing your care and affection towards their well-being.
Do the cooking utensil check!
One sure way to ruin your mood during the festive period is by going back and forth in search of large pots, serving spoons, extra dishes etc! Trust me, this can be quite annoying will surely work your nerves. Since you will be doing a lot of cooking, it’s important to check that your cooking utensils are in order and will be able to accommodate the amount of cooking you need to do. This will save you time and make things a lot easier for you. If you find that anyone is missing, make sure you add it to your shopping list.
Make a checklist
Yes, a checklist! Save yourself a lot of trouble by creating a special Christmas checklist that will help you keep track of all your activities. You can download it on your mobile phone or have a printed copy pasted on the refrigerator or anywhere that is attention-grabbing. A properly detailed checklist is a lifesaver! With it, there is no missing out on any activity except it’s deliberate.
