7 things you can clean in your washing machine

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Hey guys! How y’all doing? Welcome to another #MondayToShine! I trust we all had an amazing weekend and are also ready to embrace the new week with a fresh wave of positivity and a can-do spirit! Today on the blog, I will be sharing an interesting post that was inspired by my seemingly annoying encounter this past weekend. The topic for today’s post came off as an aftermath of a funny laundry decision I made on Saturday. I had just finished mopping the tiles and was faced with a huge mountain of laundry. Clothes, shoes, backpacks…Throwing the clothes in a washing machine definitely reduced the level of stress awaiting me. And dang! The idea struck me. Why not toss why backpack and footwear in the machine and give it a spin??? I definitely did guys! Here are 7 things you can clean in your washing machine.

SPORT GEARS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Sport gear

If you or your kids are heading to the field, then you know you won’t be coming home empty handed. There are loads of mud stain and dust coming with you and your sport gears. Tell mummy to worry no more about spending precious time trying to get the dirt out by hand scrubbing or using a brush.

Simply have her close all the Velcro or straps, put those plastic and padded pieces in a mesh laundry bag and toss into the washing machine. Use the gentle cycle and regular detergent,  skip the clothes dryer and allow the items to air dry.

BACKPACKS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Back packs

Also on the list of 7 things you can clean in your washing machine, are BACKPACKS. Unless your backpack, gym bag or travel bag is made from leather, fabric and vinyl ones can be cleaned in the washing machine with a regular load of similar colored laundry.  Simply take the time to completely empty every pocket. Treat stains with a stain removal product. Work the product into the stain with a soft-bristled brush and allow it to work for at least 15 minutes before washing.  Turn the bag inside out and wash with a heavy duty detergent and warm water.

BED PILLOWS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Bed pillows

Whether you have feather bed pillows or polyester-filled pillows, they can be cleaned in your washing machine. Just make sure not to over fill the washer, you need to give the pillows room to move. You should also use a nice scenting detergent. However, make sure you choose a sunny, breezy day. While pillows can go in the dryer, they can take quite a while to dry. Some time outside will speed the process and help remove odors.

CANVAS AND SNEAKERS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Sneakers

Who would have imagined tossing footwear in the washing machine! Unless the manufacturer specifically says no, canvas tennis shoes and even some leather can be washed in a washing machine.  Just be sure to remove the laces (you can wash separately or replace), remove any insole inserts, place in a mesh laundry bag, and wash with a good detergent and warm water. If there are heavy stains, treat them first by working in a stain remover and let it work for 15 minutes before washing. If odor is a problem, add one cup of baking soda or a disinfectant to the wash water.

STUFFED TOY

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Stuffed toys

Now this particular number on the list would be helpful to mothers who spend extra cash on shopping for new toys because the old ones are faded, dirty and unappealing. Unless your child’s   toy has a mechanical component or is vintage you can clean it in the washer.

First, check the toy for rips and make repairs to prevent the loss of filling, treat any heavily stained areas with some detergent or stain remover, and place the toy in a mesh laundry bag. Wash in a cool or warm water temperature and use the gentle cycle. Remove and allow to air dry. Like your pillows, it would also be advisable to choose or sunny/breezy day.

MOP HEADS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Mop head

I’ve seen a couple of people shop for new mops at the end of every month. And it made me wonder if they had other uses for the mop sticks. It turned out eventually the frequent replacement of the mop stick was because of how dirty and irritating the mop heads get; after a few weeks of use.  You can sanitise dirty mop heads after each use by placing in a mesh laundry bag and washing on hot. Hang to drip dry. Trust me; it would come out as brand new!!

CAR MATS

7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Car mats

And last on the list of Seven things you can clean in your washing machine. The cloth floor mats in your car are totally machine-washable. If they’re extra dirty or spotted with spill stains, douse the soiled areas with a little stain remover before washing on warm with your normal detergent and hanging to dry. Try not to do this more than once every few months, however, as the rubber backing could start to deteriorate from too many spin cycles.

Hide TV Cords with cord covering kits

The number one offender of an ugly home has to be the television/sound system cables. However there is a brilliant way to outsmart these offenders. By using a cord covering kit, you can easily keep the cords concealed in a single place with no fear of electrical surges or as Nigerians will call it an “electrical shock” lol. African Corner: African Bedroom Decor

African Corner: African Bedroom Decor

Hello to you reading this! Its good to have you back, and if its your first time being here, ekaabo! Its Thursday and you know what we do this time of the week- AFRICAN CORNER!!! On this week’s post, we will be discussing African Corner: African Bedroom Decor which centers around giving your bedroom that afro-centric vibe you’ve been looking for.

Alright, last week, we talked about Accenting Walls the African Way which you can read up on just in case you missed it. It was a fun and I’m hoping that you guys enjoyed it too? Please, please and please guys, if you have learnt anything from this African Corner series that you have put to use, could you take some pictures and send them to us? That would really make us happy.

OK! Today’s post titled African Corner: African Bedroom Decor will be infusing the African theme into some bedroom basics to enable everyone connect to it much personally. The basics like bedspreads & pillow cases, Lampshades and Rugs.

Bedspreads and Pillowcases

Bedspreads and pillowcases are the most basic things when talking about bedroom decor. I have seen a plain and old bedspread make a room look like a concentration camp against when a new and beautiful bedspread gives it that vibrant look. Bedspreads are also a very affordable item in any room decor that is why I added it to this list. Get yourself and African inspired bedspread and give your bed that look you want. Ankara patterns now come in very comfy fabric that are suitable for bedspreads and pillow cases.

Lampshades

Yes, even lampshades come in African prints too you know! I love how creatives aren’t holding back when it comes to using African prints for just about anything and everything. Its a really exciting thing to watch. Embrace your African roots in every way possible! This lampshade is really stylish. It stands out so beautifully against the white background too.

This would be a great gift to give a book lover. Placing this on your nightstand just creates the right feels, trust me.

Rugs

Rugs are a great way to decorate your bedroom. Most people prefer to place it at the bottom or side of their bed. For those with much larger bedroom space, they place it at what somewhat resembles the center of the room. A tribal rug that comes in animal prints or aztec is a great way to make your bedroom have that ethnicity we talk about.

Shower Curtains

Bathrooms need love too! If you have your bathroom attached to your bedroom why leave it out of the creative process? Get that glam on in the bathroom by adding a touch of that African inspo by using African themed shower curtains like this one below-

A very salient point to remember when mixing and matching is the color scheme. It is perhaps the most important thing to remember. You don’t want to have individual, unique and beautiful pieces that do not complement each other when brought together do you? I’m guessing your answer is no. I am not trying to sound like a minimalist but hey, sometimes simple does it best. Especially when you are just trying your hands at something for a start.

Remember that most African prints are quite colorful and usually have lots of patterns. I would recommend you go easy on having too many contrasting colors going on in one place.

So that’s it guys! We have come to the end of today’s African Corner: African Bedroom Decor with DecorhubNG. We are on Instagram and Twitter with the same handle @Decorhubng. Please share your African corner moments with us by using the hashtag #DecorhubNgAfricanCorner. Thanks for reading, have a wonderful day!

African Corner: Accenting Walls the African Way

African Corner: Accenting Walls the African Way

Hey guys, how y’all doing? I trust the week has been amazing! Yes if you are reading this right about now, you are just in time for this week’s episode of  #DecorhubNgAfricanCorner titled African Corner: Accenting  Walls the African Way. Last week on the series we shared useful tips with you on how to decorate with Ankara throw–pillows and frames. Have you tried something out? Feel free to send us a picture.

This week on #DecorhubNgAfricanCorner we would be talking about African Corner: Accenting Walls the African Way. Don’t forget that we are all about the African vibe in this corner, so no! We cannot take a chill pill. Grab a cold drink as you learn new and exciting ideas to give your wall a fresh breathe of African life.

First, let’s take a look at what an accent wall is.

An accent wall is a wall that has been painted a different color or different shade from the rest of the room, or one that has been otherwise changed from the other walls in the space through the installation of wallpaper, stone, wood or other design feature. Usually, an accent wall can be a perfect way to break up a large room, to emphasize a particularly great architectural feature, or to instil a sense of the extraordinary in a completely ordinary space.

So now that we have a basic understanding of what an accent wall is, let’s check out the following wall accents with strong African themes that will bring an African excitement to that boring wall that stares coldly at you upon entering the house.

African Savannah Inspired Wall Accent :

Topping our pick is this African Savannah Inspired Wall Accent. This has to be a perfect accent for a nature enthusiast as it brings together an interesting combination of the richness of the African Savannah. The Zebra/Giraffe stripes against the gourds reminds one of how mother nature resonates with us Africans. This wall accent is definitely the way to go for your African themed wall.

Wall Accent

Gold Benin Cast:

We definitely had to travel down to the Benin Empire for our second. Y’all will quite agree that  the Benin’s cannot be ruled out in the discourse of arts globally. Moving forward, this Gold Benin Cast is a smart pick for your workplace or study wall.  It’s also a very bold choice of color and art that brings a certain type of edginess to your space.

Golden Benin Cast

Fulani hand-painted calabashes:

We wouldn’t be able to get enough of these Fulani painted calabashes even if we wanted to. If you are looking to bring the beauty of the north to your space, then this is surely a way to go. This wall accent brings a touch of the richness of the Northern culture to your wall. You can decide to arrange them vertically/horizontally or place them in specific spots as visible in the image below.

Fulani Calabashes

Animal-skin patterned wall accent:

And who said you couldn’t bring the zoo to your space? This animal patterned wall accent is a sure pick for animal lovers. The Zebra/Giraffe pattern particularly reminds me of Alex and Melman in Dreamwork’s Madagascar: Escape to Africa. You surely want to escape to Africa with this wall accent that is sure to leave your wall with a moderate dash of class.

Animal-skin patterned wall accent

Rafia baskets :

We surely cannot  complete this conversation about the African Corner: Accenting  Walls the African Way without mentioning the Rafia baskets. There is a lot more we can do with Rafia baskets than storing our grains in them. One of such ways is to use them as accents to decorate our walls. They are quite affordable and will surely get the job done.

Rafia baskets

Yes guys, we have come to the end of today’s episode of #DecorhubngAfrianCorner.  And you have been reading about African Corner: Accenting  Walls the African Way. We gave you a feel of the African Savannah, we took you to the Benin Empire and we also showed you a little bit of the Fulani’s. We trust you will be going African in your next accent wall projects. Remember, your home is unique, so your accent wall should be just as special. We love to hear from you so feel free to drop your comments and questions in the comment section below.
