Lift the mood in your home with scented candles

Lift the mood in your home with scented candles

Debola stepped into the house with a cloud of anxiety hovering carelessly above her head. Upon letting herself into the living room, a warm and unfamiliar aroma rushed into her nostrils along with the air she breathed. Like it was the medicine she needed, the smell began to slowly evacuate the anxiety that reeked from her pulsating heart. It softened her-like butter before you add sugar, in the first step of making something sweet.  It was her first experience of how scent could naturally slip into rhythm. It was hypnotic, voraciously satisfying and she soon realised that she couldn’t stop gulping the air even if she wanted to….” Today on the blog, we are all about scents and how to Lift the mood in your home with scented candles! Accent Wall Tips and Tricks

Accent Wall Tips and Tricks

Accent Wall Tips and Tricks are those very much overlooked things that most people fail to consider when shopping for accents. Many times, people go accent shopping with great expectations, hoping to pick out the most unique pieces and colors but unfortunately get home to unleash their interior decor skills only to find out that the items are a total mismatch- both in color and style.

Today’s post will be giving very detailed guidelines on how you can achieve style and class all by yourself without having to hire an expert.

Don’t shy away from bold colors:

For the minimalists in the house who just like it simple, doing a bold accent wall doesn’t take the class out of it contrary to popular beliefs. Use a bold color of the pieces on the wall while you can use a more subtle variant of that same color for the wall paint.

Go stone age:

Or in this case tiles and shelves can also do the wall much needed justice, giving it the desired uniqueness it deserves. This trick is that the wall speaks for itself so you won’t need to complement it with many pieces.

Use the color wheel:

This will help you in more ways than one especially if you have difficulties with picking complementary colors.

Do not use too many colors:

When shopping for accents, most people end up buying too many colors because they feel that’s the only way it can be beautiful. This is not true. Use complementary colors like- pink&green, green&yellow, purple & lilac, etc.

The main color should appear at least 3 times:

Ask yourself these basic questions when shopping- What color do I want to be predominant? Do I want it to pop or blend in? That decision is yours to take hence you must take your time to properly study your environment and decide what works best for you.

These are some of our tricks on choosing the right accent walls and colors to give your space the style it deserves.

Prepping your home for the New Year

Prepping your home for the New Year

It’s almost that time of the year when we start preparing to usher in a new year. For some of us, a fresh coat of paint or new furniture usually seems like the best way to go. Gbemisola Oke of SPACE Magazine gives us an interesting chunk on how to properly manage and create more space in our homes, basically the way to go about Prepping your home for the New Year.

Downsize, darling!

The first (and most important) step in keeping your home clutter-free is to remove the excessive possessions that are stealing our lives, time, and energy. Most of the time our homes are filled with items we no longer use, these items might be clothes, gifts, souvenirs (most Nigerian homes), papers etc. To have an organized home it is essential that we get rid of those unnecessary items we have in our spaces. Making the decision to get rid of your old things may actually be the hardest part of de-cluttering. Its Christmas season you can donate to charity. As a rule of thumb anything you didn’t use in 2017 has to go because you pretty much wouldn’t use it in 2018. An easy approach to de-clutter your home is by tackling it room by room as doing it all at once might be overwhelming and confusing.

Prepping your home for the New Year

Start by taking everything out of the space, giving you a clean slate and evaluate every item. To remain organised while de-cluttering, I recommend having 3 boxes or bags labelled To Keep, To Discard, To Give Charity. When deciding what to let go of or store I strongly recommend that you let go of all sentiments and you are completely honest with yourself. Make sure that what you keep is ‘home worthy.’ Is it useful? Do you love it? Does it fit? Do you need so many? Is it time to let go? Ask the questions before putting things away.”

Keep like things together

So the excess lot has been ridden off, what next?  A guiding rule is to keep like things together. Storing like things together will not only help you keep your home organised but it will also make your life easier. Always think about how you want the space to function and what kinds of activities you will be doing there. It is essential to store items that will be frequently used in easily accessible areas such as the front of the shelf or surface area or close to the areas in which they will be used.  While items that are not frequently used can be placed further away or at the back of the shelf.

Constant Cleaning and re-evaluate:

Now that you have gone through the hard work of de-cluttering your home, which is a vital part of Prepping your home for the New Year, it’s important to develop a cleaning habit. This could be cleaning your spaces once or twice a week as opposed to cleaning once every month. Doing this will make you home look cleaner and organised; it will also help you identify and eliminate unwanted items in your space. With continuous use, it is important to also evaluate your storage areas over time, if the areas are getting cluttered again you need to ask yourself the following: is there is too much items in the space? Is accessibility a problem? You answers to the questions will serve as a guide in helping you modify your storage areas.

Prepping your home for the New Year

You need to slow down the collection!

The last step is to prevent the clutter in your home from returning in the future. To live is to consume. It cannot be avoided – especially in our society and culture. It is important that you think twice about what you bring in to your home.  So just before you make that purchase or collect that souvenir at a party ask yourself the following questions:

Prepping your home for the New Year

Is this item really needed? Do I have a place to store this when I get it home? How much extra work will this possession add to my life? Am I buying it for the right reasons? Asking this questions will definitely help you slow down your accumulation process.

Interior Design Predictions For 2018

Interior Design Predictions For 2018

Towards the last quarter of every year, interior design experts across the globe come together to make predictions about possible design trends that would rock the coming year. It’s that time of the year again. 2018 is less than 100 days away and design experts have started making their predictions. SPACE magazine’s Adeyinka Odutuyo shares the trends to look out for in 2018.

What’s new?

One major interior design trend that rocked spaces in 2017 is the 3D PATTERNED WALLS. This chic design for walls is an extended version of the wall paper design that made a comeback in 2015 and rocked  2016. Experts are saying the wall paper trend isn’t completely out of style, but the 3D patterned wall is gaining momentum in the design industry. This design is sure to make its way into 2018 as a lot of space users are still lagging behind.

Marble table tops and counter-tops; especially in shades of white and light grey continue to trend as they are still defining spaces in 2017.

Glitter walls are OVER!!!

You heard that right. The use of glitter on walls was an interesting way to breathe life into walls that had seemingly been dead or just appeared painfully boring.  Thanks to wall paper and an extended version of wall papers, glitters just don’t do the trick anymore. If you are looking to revamp your wall with glitters, the glitz days are over!

What’s next???  Velvet, Typography and 2018!!!!

This year, Dulux’s colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says, “The one defining attribute with interior trends is that they’re continuously moving, changing one or more colours in your home will keep your interiors up-to-date forward” No wonder Sheila Irwin, a leading design expert and founder of  Maison de Cinq, calls on general space users to hitch onto a velvety ride for 2018! “Velvet is a trend that started getting really big last year in fashion, and now it seems to be hopping over to design”

Typography

Designers predict that in 2018 messages would seep deeper into our homes. To be honest this is already a trend in a lot of homes. However, American design expert Michell Gage says on Realtor.com “It’ll become increasingly popular, given the way we all communicate on social media. It will remain more of a complement to a room’s story and live on in smaller finishing touches like pillows and art,”
