7 things you can clean in your washing machine

Hey guys! How y’all doing? Welcome to another #MondayToShine! I trust we all had an amazing weekend and are also ready to embrace the new week with a fresh wave of positivity and a can-do spirit! Today on the blog, I will be sharing an interesting post that was inspired by my seemingly annoying encounter this past weekend. The topic for today’s post came off as an aftermath of a funny laundry decision I made on Saturday. I had just finished mopping the tiles and was faced with a huge mountain of laundry. Clothes, shoes, backpacks…Throwing the clothes in a washing machine definitely reduced the level of stress awaiting me. And dang! The idea struck me. Why not toss why backpack and footwear in the machine and give it a spin??? I definitely did guys! Here are 7 things you can clean in your washing machine.

SPORT GEARS

Sport gear

If you or your kids are heading to the field, then you know you won’t be coming home empty handed. There are loads of mud stain and dust coming with you and your sport gears. Tell mummy to worry no more about spending precious time trying to get the dirt out by hand scrubbing or using a brush.

Simply have her close all the Velcro or straps, put those plastic and padded pieces in a mesh laundry bag and toss into the washing machine. Use the gentle cycle and regular detergent,  skip the clothes dryer and allow the items to air dry.

BACKPACKS

Back packs

Also on the list of 7 things you can clean in your washing machine, are BACKPACKS. Unless your backpack, gym bag or travel bag is made from leather, fabric and vinyl ones can be cleaned in the washing machine with a regular load of similar colored laundry.  Simply take the time to completely empty every pocket. Treat stains with a stain removal product. Work the product into the stain with a soft-bristled brush and allow it to work for at least 15 minutes before washing.  Turn the bag inside out and wash with a heavy duty detergent and warm water.

BED PILLOWS

Bed pillows

Whether you have feather bed pillows or polyester-filled pillows, they can be cleaned in your washing machine. Just make sure not to over fill the washer, you need to give the pillows room to move. You should also use a nice scenting detergent. However, make sure you choose a sunny, breezy day. While pillows can go in the dryer, they can take quite a while to dry. Some time outside will speed the process and help remove odors.

CANVAS AND SNEAKERS

Sneakers

Who would have imagined tossing footwear in the washing machine! Unless the manufacturer specifically says no, canvas tennis shoes and even some leather can be washed in a washing machine.  Just be sure to remove the laces (you can wash separately or replace), remove any insole inserts, place in a mesh laundry bag, and wash with a good detergent and warm water. If there are heavy stains, treat them first by working in a stain remover and let it work for 15 minutes before washing. If odor is a problem, add one cup of baking soda or a disinfectant to the wash water.

STUFFED TOY

Stuffed toys

Now this particular number on the list would be helpful to mothers who spend extra cash on shopping for new toys because the old ones are faded, dirty and unappealing. Unless your child’s   toy has a mechanical component or is vintage you can clean it in the washer.

First, check the toy for rips and make repairs to prevent the loss of filling, treat any heavily stained areas with some detergent or stain remover, and place the toy in a mesh laundry bag. Wash in a cool or warm water temperature and use the gentle cycle. Remove and allow to air dry. Like your pillows, it would also be advisable to choose or sunny/breezy day.

MOP HEADS

Mop head

I’ve seen a couple of people shop for new mops at the end of every month. And it made me wonder if they had other uses for the mop sticks. It turned out eventually the frequent replacement of the mop stick was because of how dirty and irritating the mop heads get; after a few weeks of use.  You can sanitise dirty mop heads after each use by placing in a mesh laundry bag and washing on hot. Hang to drip dry. Trust me; it would come out as brand new!!

CAR MATS

Car mats

And last on the list of Seven things you can clean in your washing machine. The cloth floor mats in your car are totally machine-washable. If they’re extra dirty or spotted with spill stains, douse the soiled areas with a little stain remover before washing on warm with your normal detergent and hanging to dry. Try not to do this more than once every few months, however, as the rubber backing could start to deteriorate from too many spin cycles.

Hotplates have really evolved since the production of that “student” hotplate. Nowadays, there is usually one hotplate added to the standing cooking gas. (more…)
