Seat Height
Bar stools come in four standard seat height dimensions: short, counter, bar, and extra tall. Each height is meant to be paired with a different table height. To determine which you need, simply measure the height of your tabletop and reference the image above. In every case, there should be between 10″ – 12″ between the bar stool seat and the bottom of the counter or table.
For a flexible alternative, choose an adjustable bar stool. They are outfitted with hydraulic pumps that move the seat up or down to be comfortable for any user’s height.
Tip!
If you want a bar stool with armrests, make sure the arms are low enough to fit under the counter overhang.
Bar Stool Width (and Amount of Stools)
The most common bar stool widths are 15″, 17″, and 21″. However, the width of a bar stool also directly impacts how many stools you can fit in your space. Measure the width of your counter or bar and keep this number in mind when you are browsing stools.
We recommend 26″ – 30″ between the centers of each bar stool. This leaves at least 6″ between each seat so you can get into and out of your seat easily and not bump elbows with anyone. Wider stools should have even more room between seats, with 8″ – 10″ between stools that are 19″ – 22″ wide.
Tip!
Allow for at least 12″ – 18″ of knee space between the chair’s edge and the bar or counter.
