We take you inside the Afrocentric boutique hotel, designed by leading interior designer Tola Akerele of IDesign
For many that are more familiar with luxury hotels, a boutique hotel is characterized by its small nature yet big personality. The small nature produces such intimacy that is characterized by personal feeling and heady ambiance. One of such hotels is the Bogobiri House situated in Ikoyi, Lagos and designed by leading interior designer Tola Akerele of Idesign, a leading design firm in Nigeria.
The hotel is a warm and alluring embodiment of African themed design that celebrates Nigerian culture and art through design. The word itself “Bogobiri” refers to the ancient birthplace of Usman Dan Fodio-a place where scholarly and artistic knowledge is said to have spread like wild fire through northern Nigeria. It is also the name of a popular district in Port-Harcourt where people all over Africa converge and where the saying “there are no strangers in Bogobiri” was born.
Bogobiri House is made up of two buildings, each housing its own restaurant and rooms. The interior is an array of choice furniture that celebrate African artistry- rustic ornament and furniture, stools with heavy sculptures of African reliefs and patterns made from a mix of raw timber, straw, jute, rocks and leathers. It also features an art gallery, bars and corners for live jazz bands in the restaurant.
